I am a South African journalist, writer, editor and political analyst with some three decades’ experience, both as a staff journalist and a freelancer. Based in beautiful Cape Town, I specialise in two main areas:

Politics & Business - South African and African politics, government, current affairs, labour, business, mining, shipping, energy, and international affairs; and

Travel & Environment - culture and heritage, history, social and community interest, travel, tourism, wildlife, nature, environment, conservation, eco-tourism, and more.

I have also written extensively about military and security issues, art and entertainment, worked as a war correspondent, and written many general ‘human interest’ stories and profiles of well-known leaders in various fields.

I am contracted as Editor of Encounter Africa and Trade & Invest Africa, provide content for I-Net Bridge and write regularly for a wide variety of consumer and B2B magazines. In 1986 I established the political risk consultancy Africa-International Communications (AIC), publishingThe Monday Briefing and other reports exclusively for our clients, among whom are major corporations.

Before setting out on my own, I worked in various senior capacities for Die Burger, The Sunday Times, Republican Press and Bona magazine,Die Transvaler, and Rapport. As a freelancer I have worked for major titles such as Leadership, Mining, Black Business Quarterly BBQ, and De Kat, among others. I also worked in advertising and for the University of the Western Cape. In a deviation from writing, for some years I headed a company that traded across Africa, focusing on World Bank and other development tenders. When time permits, I am also an award-winning oil painter, a published poet, spear fisherman, hiker and wine lover.
